MHSFCA Executive Director’s Blog – July 2020

By Scott Farley
Executive Director, MHSFCA

Here is your July update from the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association:

SUMMER RULES REMINDER

Coaches need to continue following the protocols set down by the Michigan High School Athletic Association on June 9. Our season is dependent on Gov. Gretchen Whitmer releasing the entire state to Phase 5. We all need to do our part. This includes discouraging our players from participating in camps sponsored by third parties that are not committed to following such rules. The link below is a reminder of the MHSAA protocols:

SECOND HEAD COACH ZOOM MEETING

More than 360 head coaches attended our second Zoom meeting of the summer on July 7 to get updated information from the MHSAA and American Football Coaches Association. We were blessed to have MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl in attendance to give us his association’s current perspective. This includes the MHSAA’s three points of emphasis:

  • The MHSAA is committed to playing fall sports in the fall.
  • The MHSAA is committed to having three sports seasons during the 2020-21 school year.
  • The MHSAA will have contingency plans, should they become necessary. This includes plans to change seasons (if needed) and to complete seasons should a season be halted due to virus spikes.

Coaches were also provided some critical information from the AFCA regarding in season ideas for mitigating Covid-19.

VETERAN COACH DAVE LAWRENCE PASSES AWAY

Dave Lawrence, 66, former Mattawan head coach and current assistant coach at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, died unexpectedly at his home in Dexter on July 5.
Please keep his family and the AAGR football family in your prayers. Dave was a long-time member of the MHSFCA Board of Directors and chairman of the Leadership Conference. His influence on his players, fellow staff members and football across the state of Michigan was significant. He will be missed by many. The link below is to his obituary.
