Shane has been playing football since the 6th grade. He was a two year starter for the Mattawan varsity football team. In 2003-2004 Shane attended summer football camps at Central Michigan, The University of Michigan and Grand Valley State where he received a special recognition award for the individual who possesses the character necessary to be a successful football player. He also was awarded the best wide receiver award of the camp. Shane achieved a three-year “Iron Man” award for never having missed a practice or game.
Shane was also a member of the “Victors Club.” Shane was elected captain his senior year by his teammates and at the conclusion of the year shared the teams Most Valuable Player Award with Linebacker Daniel Krasinski. Shane was a member of the Coaches All Academic Team each of his four years. Shane played both offense and defense. He started as defensive back, kick returner and punt returner. On offense he played running back, was moved to wide receiver and quarterback after an injury to the starting quarterback, Cole Hayward. This led to Shane being Prep Star of the Week in the Kalamazoo Gazette.
Shane played two years of varsity basketball and was elected captain his senior year. He also played four years of varsity track, making him a three-sport, four-year standout. Shane has given back to his community by coaching youth football and basketball. He also travels to the Later Elementary as a D.A.RE. Role Model.
“There are many people I want to thank for all their support, encouragement and guidance which enabled me to acheive my goals in high school. First is my family, Justin, Charmaine, Doug, and Anna, without you I couldn’t have done any of these things. Second, I thank my coaches. Third I thank the brothers with me on the field for all the memories I’ll never forget. Last, but not least, I want to thank God. Through God anything is possible. Every Sunday I preach this at Schoolcraft Assembly of God.”
