SOUTHFIELD – The All-Stars came up big in an all-star moment.

The West pulled in front, then pulled away with two touchdowns in the final four minutes Saturday to beat the East 26-14 and win the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association East-West All-Star Classic.

“Great game, great time,” said MVP Mac Vandenhout.

Vandenhout, from Rockford, led the West on two scoring drives in the fourth quarter, finishing it off with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone to put the West up 19-14 with 3:35 remaining in the game.

Paschal Jolman (Fruitport) added a 29-yard touchdown run just over a minute later to seal the game for the West.

The West took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with Tim Kloska (Grand Rapids West Catholic) scoring on a two-yard run. The West took that lead into halftime as neither team could get the offense rolling the rest of the first half.

The East came out in the third quarter and marched down the field, led by quarterback Micale McClure (Detroit Edison). He found Adam Kidder (Madison Heights Bishop Foley) on a 17-yard scoring strike then hit Deonte Pippen Jr. (West Bloomfield) for the two-point conversion for an 8-7 lead.

The East went up 14-7 when Dominic Pesci (Farmington) and Pippen hooked up on a 57-yard touchdown.

The West came back, however, with a touchdown drive of its own in the fourth quarter. Kloska, who scored 85 touchdowns in his career at West Catholic and is headed to Army to play college football, grabbed a 15-yard touchdown pass from Vandenhout to put the West in front 14-13. The two teams were evenly matched on the stat sheet.

The West had 16 first downs and rushed for 131 yards and had 194 yards passing. The East had 14 first downs, 106 yards rushing and 199 yards through the air. Both teams punted four times and both teams completed four third down conversions and two fourth down conversion attempts.

Vandenhout rushed for 68 yards and passed for 183. Kloska and Jolman each had 29 yards rushing. Eli Vanderveen (Hudsonville) had 84 yards receiving on four catches, including a long of 40 yards. Jacob Thompson (Sturgis) led the West defense with eight tackles. Gabriel Blanchard (Freeland) had two sacks and Scooter Polk (Mount Pleasant) intercepted a pass.

For the East, Darren Hawkins (Chippewa Valley) set up the second touchdown of the day for his team with a 43-yard interception return in the third quarter.

Keion Singletary (Sterling Heights Stevenson) had eight tackles and Chuck Davidek (Livonia Stevenson) two tackles for loss.

The East offense was led by Pesci, who threw for 182 yards. McClure had 62 yards rushing. Cordell Mabins Jr. (Livonia Franklin) had 26 yards rushing and caught four passes for 49 yards.

The game was played at Lawrence Tech University in Southfield.
