Quartney began playing football for the John Ball Park Nighthawks (Steils Center) in the competitive Grand Rapids Rocket Football League when he was eight years old and continued in this league until high school. Quartney was privileged to be coached in the GRRFL by coaches Brian Mayfield and Rodney Suggs and then at Catholic Central by coaches Rogers, Dickerson, Rockwood, Joel and Tom Passinault, Paige, Hillary and McGraw.

Quartney played freshman and junior varsity basketball and earned his first varsity letter in Track and Field as a sophomore. As a freshman and sophomore Quartney played on the JV football team under the direction of Coach Gary Dickerson. In both seasons Quartney was moved up to the varsity team as they entered the playoffs. Quartney was a two-year starter on both sides of the ball in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, Quartney was voted his team’s Offensive MVP after a rebuilding season with a new coach (Tim Rogers) and staff. Quartney expressed his thanks to his fellow teammates “who worked hard in the off-season in preparation for what was an amazing ride in 2008. I would not have been here today without you all.” He extended a special thank you to the people, “who have made a big difference in my life, some more than what they will ever know: Coach Rogers, Bernard Macklin, Coach Dan Rohn from West Catholic, Steve Passinault, Coach T, and Mr. Scott Vicari.” Lastly, Quartney thanked his mother for, “everything – words cannot express my love and gratitude for her.”
