1st Assistant Coach Mike Powell
Warren Cousino High School
Mike Powell, a native of Adrian, graduated from Central Michigan University where he earned a BA in Education in1980. He received his MA in Sports Administration from Ashland University in Ohio.
Mike has been coaching football for 27 years and has been a head coach for 18 of those years. He began his teaching and coaching career in Ohio where he stayed for ten years. His head coaching career includes Lakewood HS in Ohio, Bishop Foley and Ionia HS. Powell has been at Cousino for the last nine years. During that time Cousino has won five League Championships, made six State Playoff appearances, won two District Championships, a Regional Championship and was the State Semi-Finalist in 2006. The Patriots of Cousino have also been named Detroit Lions 7 on 7 Passing Champions for the last three years under Powell’s leadership. Powell has earned League Coach of the Year honors for eight years, has been named Detroit Free Press All East Coach of the Year in 2005 and recently was named Detroit Lions High School Coach of the Week in 2007. He has also received the 10-year Service Award for the University of Michigan Football Camp.
The 2007 football season was especially memorable for Powell because the Patriots finished with an undefeated regular season, only the second time in school history. Adding to the memorable season was coaching his son, Rick, who was captain and starting quarterback, defensive back, punt returner and punter for the Patriots.
Powell has been married to Kaye, for 25 years and they have two children, Melissa (20) and Rick (18). Melissa is a junior at Michigan State University in the Eli Broad School of Business where she is studying Marketing. Rick is a senior at Cousino High school and has earned varsity letters in football, basketball and track. Powell said, “I am excited to coach the All East All Stars and thank the MHSFCA for this incredible opportunity.”
