Matt’s parents are Matt and Julie Kosmalski. He is the youngest of three, including a brother, Dan (32), and a sister, Kari (19).
Matt started playing football when he was seven years old. He played for the Lakeland Broncos from 2002-2006 and played 2007 and 2008 for the Lakes Area Hawks. From there he played for Walled Lake Northern. In 2009 he was on the freshman team. He played on the varsity team his final three years at Northern. Matt received the Certificate of Recognition for outstanding athletic achievement in 2012 from the Walled Lake School District. Matt said, “My grandfather, Jerry Taylor, is my inspiration. He played football for Walled Lake High School and Hillsdale College.”
Matt was also on the track team for Northern. Prior to his senior year he had the record in the long jump at a 21’3″. He also ran the 4×200, 4×100 and the 100 meter dash. He had an All State performance in the long jump in indoor track in February of his senior year.
Matt thanked his coaches “throughout the years, especially Coach Moore and his coaching staff at Walled Lake Northern for pushing me to do my best.” He thanked Tom, the trainer, “You worked endlessly to keep me healthy and in the game.” He thanked the Boosters “for the many hours of hard work to keep our program running.” He said, “I am so grateful to my parents for letting me live my dream and supporting me throughout this journey. Thank you to my family who came out to my games to support me and my team and thank you to my team brothers for the wonderful memories, I am proud to have been a part of this amazing football team that won the City Championship, Conference division and made it to the playoffs – all firsts for our football program.”
