Cortez began playing football in 2002 with the Detroit Police Athletic League on the Broncos team. He started playing football at Southwestern in his junior year and began excelling in his senior year. He was All State Honorable Mention for 2006 in the Detroit Free Press. Playing sports, “has helped me to be more confident and helped me realize that academics come first.”

Cortez also played basketball with Southwestern his senior year. In his spare time he boxes at Cooper Gym and helps his nieces and nephews with their homework or listens to them read him stories.

Cortez thanked, “God for giving him the ability to do all things that he set his mind to.” He thanked his mother, “for always being there and encouraging me by saying, ‘If you try a little harder, you will do a little better,’ and it paid off.” A special thanks was given to Coach Enoex who talked his mother in to letting him attend Southwestern. Cortez also thanked Mr. Hodge, Principal, who is the leader of an outstanding school. He also gave a special thanks to his teammates, Keith and Quentin, “for all the rides to and from school, practice and the games and all their support.” Finally, he thanked all the coaches, staff, and security, “who saw the potential in me and encouraged me along the way.”
