Carlin started practicing football as early as four years old while accompanying his dad, a coach with  the Port City Football Club, to practices. It wasn’t until Carlin’s freshmen year in high school that he began playing football. Carlin played varsity football for three years beginning as a sophomore. He was selected an All Area and All Conference player all three years. As a junior he was recognized on the Michigan All State team and in his senior year he was named to the State of Michigan Football Dream Team and recognized as a scholar athlete.

Carlin also participated in wrestling and track and field throughout his four years of high school. He was co-captain of the wrestling team for two years and co-captain of the football team in his senior year.

Carlin said, “I am thankful for the favor of God for my academic and athletic success. All praises and honor go to God!” He gave a special thanks for the “love of my grandparents Tommie and Linda Watson, grandma Hazel Landingham, my parents and siblings, all my uncles, aunts, cousins, and my niece.” He thanked “the Muskegon Big Red coaching and teaching staff for the expertise and guidance they gave.” He also thanked the Big Red fans and “all my team members who kept me encouraged and motivated to do my best.” Finally, he said, “I thank God for the prayers and support of my church family!”
