Assistant Coach Vernon Burden
Southfield High School
Coach Burden graduated from Southfield HS where he played three sports, football, wrestling and track. At The University of Findlay, Burden lettered four years and received his BS in Math Education in 2004. Coach Burden is working on a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University.
Burden enjoyed a six-year career as an indoor football player. He has served as captain of the Saginaw Sting and West Michigan Thunder Hawks. He has also been an integral part of two Championship teams during his career.
Coach Burden started his coaching career at Patrick Henry HS in Hamler, Ohio. After coaching one season with the Patriots, he returned to Southfield, his alma mater, where he has been an assistant for the past eight seasons. The Blue Jays have made it to the state playoffs four times and have had six straight winning seasons. They have won three district championships, one regional championship, and have been named to the Academic All State team four times. He said, “I love coaching and teaching young men about a sport that I have loved and have been a part of for over 20 years. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing student athletes accomplish their goals.”
Burden is also head wrestling coach and an assistant in track and field. He teaches math and has served as an assistant principal.
Vernon resides in Farmington Hills with his fiancée Amanda Hamilton. The couple will marry on July 6, 2013. He thanked Amanda and his mother, Bessie Burden, “for all of the love and support they have given me through the years as a player and coach.”
