Spencer started playing football at the age of seven and has played ever since. He started his high school career on the freshman team and was moved up to the junior varsity team after three games. As a sophomore and junior he played at the varsity level as a running back and strong safety. His senior year he played running back, started out as free safety and was later moved to cornerback.
As a junior, Spencer rushed for 909 yards and twelve touchdowns in just 7 games. His senior year he rushed for 1,575 yards and 22 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 26 tackles, 6 interceptions (1 returned for a touchdown), and a 90 yard kick off return for a touchdown.
As a junior Spencer received Best Offensive Player of the Year from his coaches and as a senior he was selected team captain and team MVP from his coaches and team members. Spencer also broke the school record for rushing yards in one season and tied the touchdown record for 2009.
Spencer also participated in baseball (1 year), wrestling (1 year) and track (3 years) where he was team captain for 2 of those 3 years.
Spencer said, “I thank everybody who has always been there to support me through football, school and life: family, friends, teachers and the community. I especially thank my mom and dad for their love and support and for helping me stay focused on all aspects. I couldn’t have done it without them.” He also thanked, “my teammates, without them I wouldn’t be where I am today. They kept me strong and working hard. Thanks for all the memories and good times we’ve had, it’s been an unforgettable four years.” He finished by thanking his coaches, “for believing in me and pushing me to be the best that I could be on and off the field, especially Coach Gorham for working around my schedule to work with me in the off season on my speed and agility. I’m proud to be able to represent Portage Central in this game! “
