Ryan began playing football in sixth grade in the Pop Warner program and finished his high school football career as a two-year, two-way starter for the Lakers. Ryan played many positions including wide receiver, tight end, defensive safety, defensive back, outside linebacker, and punter. In his senior season as a wide receiver, Ryan led the Lakers with 38 receptions for 621 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a punter, he averaged 41.72 yards per punt with only 12 punts returnable. His impressive punting statistics allowed him to be ranked by MaxPreps as the #2 overall punter in Michigan. On defense Ryan was able to earn his team’s Blue Ribbon Award for his 80+ tackles at outside linebacker and received several “Smack of the Week” awards. To top it off, he was named All Conference as a wide receiver, as an outside linebacker, and as a punter and was chosen as the Northwest Conference Offensive MVP. He additionally was named to the Northern Michigan Football Dream Team as a punter and earned All State honors as a wide receiver.
Ryan was also a three year starter on the basketball team earning All Conference and All State honors in both his junior and senior seasons.
Ryan thanked, “God for the blessing of athletic ability, my parents and sister for all their support during all the hot 90 degree games and cold 30 degree ones too, Grandpa and Grandma for cheering me on from the stands, and everyone else who has shown support over the years.” Ryan also thanked his coaches: Dave Haughn, Brian Maurer, Geoff Miller, and Dan Hobbins.” He gave, “A big special thanks to Bill Hollenbeck for the extra support and encouragement and for everything he did to make me a better player.” He also gave thanks to the Glen Lake Community, the Boosters Club, and all the fans that make it great to be a Laker!”
