Nick is the son of James and Sue Kolanowski. He has an older sister Jenny, who played basketball and an older brother Andy, who played football. Both also attended Manistee Catholic Central Schools.

Nick started playing football in fifth grade in the Manistee Recreation Association league, playing for Manistee Catholic Central’s youth team. He continued playing football through middle school and finishing up with four years on the varsity football team. During his four years of varsity football, he rushed for over 4,000 yards and scored 67 touchdowns. Nick was named first team All Conference in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 as a running back, and First Team All Conference as a linebacker in 2010. He was also named West Michigan “D” League Conference Offensive MVP in 2009. In 2008, 2009 and 2010 he was named to the Honorable Mention All Purpose All State Team and All State Honorable Mention Division 7-8 running back in both the AP, and Detroit Free Press. He was also named Class D MVP by TV 9 & 10 News and Art Van in 2010. 

Nick participated in MRA baseball growing up, basketball at Manistee Catholic Central from fourth grade through high school, and played on the varsity golf team all four years. He was named as an All Conference Honorable Mention Basketball player in 2010 and First Team All Conference golfer in 2010.

Nick thanked his family for “always supporting me and being there for me at all of my games.” He thanked his coaching staff from elementary, junior high, and varsity for “helping me be the best that I could be and developing me into the person that I am now.” He also thanked the community of Manistee for all of the support through ad donations and always showing up at football games. “We truly do have the best fans,” said Nick. Nick thanked his teammates for “always playing their hearts out and never giving up and having four great years of football together.” Last, he thanked the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association for giving him this opportunity to play in the 31st annual Michigan High School All Star Football Game.
