John began his football career upon entering his freshman year. He played tight end his freshman and sophomore years under professional football player, Coach Jay Riemersma. Coach Derek Pennington took the reins John’s junior year and moved him to the offensive line where he received All Conference and All Area recognition. During his senior year, John played on the offensive line, as well as defensive end. At the conclusion of his season, John was named Special Mention All State by the Associated Press for Division 3-4, named Division 3 All State by the Detroit Free Press, named All State Honorable Mention in Division 3-4 by the Detroit News, earned a nod on the Grand Rapids Press Dream Team at defensive end, was recognized as All Area by the Holland Sentinel at offensive line and All Area by the Grand Valley Advance at defensive line. He also was acknowledged by receiving the Steve Piersma Lineman Award for his determination and commitment to the sport.

John’s other passion is throwing the shot put. He competed indoor and outdoor at the state level both his junior and senior years. John was named All State, All Conference, and All Area in track and field.

John thanked his family for “their constant support and encouragement throughout his high school career.”  He thanked all of his coaches at Zeeland East High School. He gave special thanks to Coach Neal, Coach Pennington, Coach Kocsis, and Coach Ayotte. “I would not be the man I am today if it wasn’t for their hard work, dedication, and support.” John also thanked “God for the gift of athletic ability.”
