Drake graduated from Fort Smith Northside HS in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He earned a BA in sociology from Langston University in Oklahoma. He continued his education at the University of Detroit Mercy receiving his Masters degree in social studies. Drake has been married for 27 years to his college sweetheart, Cathy, this union brought about three children, Drake II, Drakia and Drakal.

Drake began his coaching career with the East Side Raiders of the Detroit Police Athletic League, where he coached from 1979-1989 winning five city championships. He started his HS career at Detroit Southeastern the summer of 1989 where he built one of the most competitive programs in Detroit. In January of 1999 he started at Denby Tech and Prep HS and for the past seven years he has qualified for the state playoffs six times. He has wonthe Division 1 title in Detroit three times and was runner-up in the City Championship in 2004 and 2006.

He said, “Coaching in the All Star game is a golden opportunity and one of the biggest thrills of my career.” He thanked the MHSFCA and his wife and children for, “giving their time for so many years.”
