Derek has been a successful athlete since the third grade having played for different all star traveling teams in baseball and basketball. Derek began playing football in the seventh grade. He was moved to the varsity team his sophomore year and started and lettered all three of his remaining years. In his junior and senior years, he started at middle safety and wide receiver. He also did the teram’s punting, kick-offs, punt and kick returns, and was the back-up quarterback. Derek has always been the “utmost team player and leader.” With those qualities Derek was named team captain his senior year.
Derek thanked his mom and dad for “always being there for him,” and his brother for “encouraging me to be the best I could be.” Also Derek thanked “Grandpa Dave, Grandma Janet, Grace, Uncle Matt, Coach Bays, coach Mills, Coach Brohl, Coach Sheldon, all his teammates and the Sandusky High School staff and teachers for all their support and friendships made along the way.” Most of all Derek gave thanks to “God for giving me the ability to play sports and hopefully be a positive roll model for someone else to see.”
