Coach Thorne graduated from Farmington Hills Harrison High School in 1975 where he was co-captain of the 1974 Hawks Football Team for a young head coach named John Herrington. He also co-captained the 1979 Tarter Football Team at Wayne State University where he earned both BS and MA degrees.
Coach Thorne began his coaching career at Livonia Stevenson under the tutelage of Hall of Fame Coach Jack Reardon. He also coached at North Farmington High School before returning to his alma mater Harrison High School in 1997, where he was defensive coordinator on the junior varsity. In 2008 Coach Thorne became the varsity defensive coordinator for the Hawks, winning a Division 2 State Championship in 2010.
Coach Thorne recently retired from 31 years of teaching special education in the Farmington Public School System. He has been married to his wife, Joanna, for 33 years they have four adult sons.
