Darrell started playing football for the Eastside Raiders when he was ten. Their home field was the same as that used by Martin Luther King HS where Darrell played his freshman year. He transferred to center Line and started on their varsity when he was a sophomore. In that  first year he had 78 tackles, 4 sacks and 200 rushing yards as a fullback and helped the team to a state playoff berth. As a junior he had 115 tackles and 8 sacks and was named to the All Macomb County team. His senior year he was a team captain, had 93 tackles and 6 sacks as a defensive end and had a 73 yard touchdown reception as a wide receiver. Darrell was a two-year defensive team MVP and earned two Academic Letters. He was on the Honor Roll each marking period all three years.

Darrell participated in track all three years where he broke the school discus record and was named All Conference and All County in the discus and shot. He also played varsity basketball for two years.

Darrell thanked his family, supporters and coaches. He thanked Ronnie Hamilton (deceased) who “I considered to be my step-dad” and his step-brother, Byron for coming to every game his junior year. He thanked his mom for helping him to understand the importance of “grades first and that playing football is a privilege.”
