Hello All. My daughter competed yesterday in the 2010 State Meet for Powerlifting at GRCC, and I just wanted to say, “Wow!” There were some amazing athletes competing. The competition for the state record that took place back and forth between two young ladies on Platform 13 was a lot of fun. My daughter has been a three-sport athlete for all four years of her high school career and is a member of the Class A State Volleyball Championship team from Jenison. She will be a four-sport athlete this year if you include powerlifting. What she loves most about powerlifting? “There is such great comrade among all the competitors, not just the ones from you own school. You can’t help but cheer for someone when they’re lifting – you want them to succeed.” Congratulations to you and your crew on a well-run meet! P.S. Is it true if you placed in the Top 10 Women’s Division you are All-State? That’s a rumor we heard. Thank you, Katy Hevelhurst

The 2010 State Championship was full of with out a doubt, amazing athletes. Going to State is an honor, but I wasn’t impressed by any means with the way it was operated. Powerlifting is a lot of mental strength as well as physical. Out of the nine lifts I made, two of them were disrupted. It is hard for a lifter to get used to one bar then have to jump to another bar while trying to project his best lift. When the judges load the incorrect weight and don’t listen to the lifter saying that it is the wrong weight, isnt the best way to judge any meet period. So in addition to doing a whole heavy deadlift for nothing, I was getting ready to squat when I man pulled the bar back to the rack because a collar wasn’t on. That is also a tough mental challenge to overcome while trying to lift your max. Expecting a lifter to be able to work to his full potential is to much to ask when they have been sitting in the gym for 6 hours standing for they’re own j.v. players. I live 4 hours away so being in a gym for 11 hours and then driving home isn’t setting the best mood. Only one other thing was a challenge. The parking wasn’t set up to well. Once you found it you were okay but. it might have taken a couple gallons of gas riding around the same two blocks.
I am going to be sad now that my daughter has done her 4 years of powerlifting and is now graduating. But she is a State Champ!!!! Way to go Heather!!!! Congrats to all the girls, especially Whitmore Lake and Lake Orion. My daughter has made some great friends in this sport.
My only feeling on the State Meet is I don’t feel that it is fair for basketball players to get waivers to compete at states. They usually do not have games on Saturdays and can come and compete at regional qualifers just like the rest of the girls and boys. I am hoping this will change for the future. Courtney Dean kick some butt next year and keep us posted!!!!
